Statewide Bridge Scour Pile Depth Studies

The objective of this project is to develop methodology, equipment and data analysis software for testing and determination of pile length and embedment depth at Alaska bridges. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) lacks pile embedment depth data for over fifty public bridges in Alaska, roughly five percent of our bridge inventory. Federal code of regulations (23 CFR 650) require State Department's of Transportation (DOT's) to inspect bridges for scour vulnerabilities, which is difficult to accomplish without pile depth information.

    • Additional work is required to develop the test method. Tasks include hammer design, reasons for under estimation of pile length and estimating material properties for higher order theories.
