Sign Life Expectancy

The main objective of this study is to provide South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) with a well-researched sign management plan based on actual expected sign life that will extend the life of signs over the current method and at the same time be in compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) specified minimum retroreflectivity levels. SCDOT maintains approximately 750,000 signs. Prolonging the life of these assets will result in direct cost savings. The benefits of having a more accurate sign management program will also improve roadway safety and support the SCDOT’s Target Zero initiative and commitment to eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries over time.
