Highway Construction Work Zone Safety Performance and Improvement in Louisiana

The overall goal of this research is to reduce fatalities and severe injuries through improving work zone safety management in Louisiana. This goal is identified in the Louisiana Strategic Highway Safety Plan by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) program requirements per MAP-21. The specific goal of this research project is to provide information about work zone crashes and how they are reported. The analysis of work zone crashes can be used by the LADOTD and other agencies for a more effective and efficient safety management of work zones in Louisiana. This becomes even more critical since fatalities are on the rise again after several years of decline. Also, there are limited resources available for additional programs and thus it is imperative to improve data collection and make better use of data. This research also addresses the question regarding how information about work zone crashes is collected and how severe injury crashes happen in work zones or in approaches to work zones. This will result in a more targeted deployment of resources.
