District Freight Trip Generation: On-Site Berths and the Curbside Implications
Effective management of freight deliveries is integral to solving the larger curbside management puzzle in congested and built-out urban areas. Over the last few years District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) has taken a strategic approach to addressing the issue of freight management. However, DDOT does not currently know what the actual number of deliveries and size of delivery trucks is for commercial/retail uses, yet the agency is responsible for making a determination as to whether or not the loading provided in new developments is sufficient. This project seeks to address this need by collecting data on actual loading activity for a variety of uses in the District and surveying shipment receivers about typical freight activity. In addition, the project will review recent building permits to determine how typical exemptions are to loading requirements. The final report will analyze and describe what affect loading decisions have had on the curbside and make recommendations as to what loading requirements should be to accommodate observed loading activity.
