Rapid Bridge Demolition Plan Review Guidance

Rapid bridge demolition is an important part of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). Bridges need to be rehabilitated or replaced once they have reached their design lives. In other cases, the bridges need to be partially or completely removed if the bridges or the highways underneath the bridges need to be widened to accommodate the increase of the capacity of the transportation system. In recent years, ABC has received significant research attention. However, it is mainly focused on the construction of the actual bridge, and rapid bridge demolition has received less attention. In particular, there is no guidance that can be used by departments of transportation (DOTs) to review the contractors’ plans for rapid bridge demolition projects. Bridge demolition involves various aspects of construction, structure, transportation, utilities, etc. Properly designed rapid bridge demolition plans can decrease construction time, reduce traffic impacts, improve the public safety, and reduce the demolition cost. Therefore, this research will develop rapid bridge demolition plan review guidance, based on a comprehensive literature review; surveys of DOTs, and demolition contractors and consultants; and a synthesis of the information obtained.
