Improving Safety in Pavement Field Testing

The objectives of this research included: (1) determining the state-of-the practice for safely operating a full-sized test vehicle at highway speeds for the collection of pavement condition and pavement performance data; (2) determining the state-of-the-practice for the collection of pavement condition and pavement performance data within a MOT operation or work zone, including stop-and-go operations; (3) develop and standardized a practical method for improved safety during testing; (4) develop a PTO Computer Based Training course and Handbook to properly educate operators on best practices and safer testing protocols; and (5) develop recommendation for essential MOT safety indexes.
