Understanding the Impacts of Work Zone Activities on Traffic Flow Characteristics

Traffic delays and congestion in work zones are primarily caused by interference of construction and maintenance activities with traffic flow. Unfortunately, there is little understanding on what specific work activities under what physical and operational constraints interfere with traffic flow that leads to significant user costs. The goal of this project is to study the cause and effect relationship between type of work activity and traffic mobility in a work zone, and to develop traffic flow characteristic curves using real-world traffic flow and work activity data. Better understanding of the causal relationship between work activities and traffic flow will provide ideas of developing approaches to mitigate work zone traffic congestion. This study needs a substantial amount of fine time resolution data for traffic speed, volume, and occupancy, and vehicle type entering and exiting the work zone. The study also requires the detailed history of work activities to correlate with the resulting traffic flow. The models developed in this study will be tested for transferability across multiple work zones. These new models help to improve the design of traffic mitigation plans, traffic control devices placement, and scheduling of work activities.
