Field Performance Evaluations of Sustainable Aggregate By-Product Applications (Phase II)

The main objective is to determine from field performance evaluations the most successful sustainable/green applications utilizing large quantities of quarry by-products in road construction. Full-scale test sections will be constructed at ATREL to demonstrate innovative and sustainable uses of quarry by-product applications. The constructed pavement sections will be tested using the University of Illinois accelerated pavement testing equipment ATLAS in order to evaluate field performances of the most promising quarry by-product applications. The study will produce draft specifications for the beneficial quarry by-product utilization, which is expected to have an immediate impact for sustainable construction practices in the State of Illinois by reducing total energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions per ton of aggregate production and resulting in significant savings on Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) construction projects.
