Asphalt Binder Extraction Protocol for Determining Amount & PG Characteristics of Asphaltic Mixtures

Indiana Department of Transportation (DOT) conducted a study and the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) is presently conducting another study that will help improve test procedures for aggregates with high weight loss. All of these results should be available in time to incorporate in this study. Specific procedures for the ignition test will be provided for handling hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) since most mixes now use RAP. The Joint Mix Formula (JMF) tolerances and control chart limits are set up based on variability of test results. Testing in this study will provide an estimate of variability and these numbers will be used to provide recommended JMF tolerances, to help the DOT establish control limits for the control charts, and to help determine appropriate pay factors. The information will also be helpful in dispute resolution when testing is performed in more than one laboratory.
