Accelerating Development of Structural Layer Coefficients (SLC) of Bases

The primary objective of the proposed project is to develop a method for determination of base Structural Layer Coefficients (SLCs) that significantly reduces the required timeframe. A previous research project has produced a synthesis of current and past practices for determination of SLCs and it is anticipated that this synthesis will serve as the guiding outline from which a method will be developed suitable for Florida base materials. The synthesis has indicated that determination of the SLC for a base material can typically be accomplished via three general methodologies: (1) methods that determine SLCs via relationships with other material parameters, (2) methods that determine SLCs via estimates of the structural number (SN) of existing and available pavement sections, and (3) methods that establish SLCs via equivalencies with a reference material. The the research team aims to investigate these various methodologies and the series of tasks described below is intended to function as a process of discovery to see if the the research team can determine if any are suitable for Florida base materials.
