Rapid Bridge Deck Joint Repair Investigation - Phase III, RB33-013
The objective of this additional scope is to develop designs for "minimum concrete removal" and "deck sliding over the backwall" type concepts, based on the findings from the previous phases of this research project. To this end, candidate bridges will firstly be selected and modeled using Finite Element (FE) method. Based on FE results, the researchers will assist Iowa DOT designers to develop plans that conform to the design concepts. Lastly, a plan for construction observation and post-construction testing will be developed. Various options will be considered during the design development process, e.g., expansion joint type, size and shape of expansion joint, anchorage, amount of concrete removal, way to provide reinforcing bar continuity precast vs. cast in place panel, joints between new panels and existing structures, and others.
