Handbook on Maine Native Plants and Grasses for Roadside Habitat

Maine roadsides are regularly mowed short like turf grass which disfavors native grasses and forbs, disrupts native plant flowering and seed ripening and eliminates habitat for pollinators. It also results in a flat, uninspiring appearance. Mowing is expensive in terms of fuel, time and equipment, encourages water runoff and erosion, reduces water infiltration, and pollutes. Wild Seed Project, a Maine-based nonprofit (www.wildseedproject.net), will collaborate with a Maine-state botanist and Maine-state Vegetation Manager to determine native plant species best suited for roadside native plant restoration. These species will be listed in a manual tailored for interested parties and/or Department of Transportation (DOT) employees that specifies native plant seed collection, storage and propagation methods along with photos of plants and seeds for easy identification. Botanical information will be concise and easy to follow. Recommended mowing times will be included in the manual. Species selection will be sensitive to roadside safety issues such as visibility and deer/wildlife barriers. Research will include gathering information from state vegetation specialists on existing roadside native plant populations, and result in list of species most likely to be effective in introducing and/or reestablishing native plants along Maine roads. The final step will be the creation of the manual for distribution to a network of DOT employees.
