Investigation of Sediment Suspension Technology

This project will access and critically review existing literature and testing on in-situ sediment suspension measurement systems. In addition to literature the private investigator (PI) will conduct interviews with organizations such as dredging management agencies such as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation to determine what type and the extent of the research they have conducted in this area, as well as their data needs. The research questions to be addressed via this literature review include: (1) What is the scale required for representative sediment suspension measurements? (2) What is the ideal configuration (Annual or unidirectional)? (3) What technology is required to accurately quantify shear and suspended load? (4) Does the design of the flow in the flume impact the spatial distribution of erosion, and if it does what is the impact to erodability predictions. (5) Do the existing technologies such as SEDFlume and the various in-situ technologies provide the information that is needed, or are there more important aspects of erosion that are not currently addressed? (6) Can recent advances in measurement and sensing technology be used to improve erodability predictions?
