Self-Consolidating Concrete for Prestressed Bridge Girders

The material properties of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) used by precast pre-stressed girder suppliers to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) have not been sufficiently proven, especially related to pre-stress loss and time dependent flexural stiffness. These concerns, along with material segregation issues during placement, have kept WisDOT from allowing the use of SCC in pre-stressed bridge girders. Precasters have been using SCC in the fabrication of non-bridge components for many years. It has particular benefits of reducing production costs and providing much-improved surfaces without “bug holes” and other defects. The performance of pre-stressed bridge girders, however, is strongly dependent on material properties such as modulus, shrinkage and creep. Lacking substantiated data on these material properties, WisDOT has not allowed use of SCC for pre-stressed girders. Also, during a previous field trial of SCC in girders in Wisconsin, the producer had difficulty in maintaining uniformity of the mix, and problems were observed with excessive segregation of wet batches during placement. SCC is used by other state DOTs and might be a preferred material in Wisconsin if the properties can be clearly defined and producers are able to consistently mix, deliver and place SCC without detrimental segregation. The objective of this research is to develop a Wisconsin specific mix design and specification for the use of SCC in pre-stressed girders used on WisDOT bridge projects. This research will also test the SCC for specific material properties, time dependent characteristics, and prestress losses. This research will also involve coordination with WisDOT Bureau of Structures and a Precast Girder Producer for the design, implementation, testing, monitoring, and documentation of a full-scale implementation on one of the department’s bridge projects.
