Cold-In-Place Recycling (CIR) Phase IV - Performance Mix Design

Phases I-III of this project - Sampling and Testing Protocol Development - developed a draft mix design procedure to address the recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) temperature sensitivity and moisture content sensitivity within the material, providing a mix with as much binder as possible without compromising rutting stability. Phase IV will run a series of mixes with different emulsions and RAP sources through the draft design to verify its viability. Phase IV will also reevaluate the advantages versus the disadvantages of lime in the mix. The project will evaluate a group of older cold in place recycling (CIPR) projects with collection of some field conditions and properties to verify if concerns over high void content (10%-15%) potentially leading to premature fatigue failure are valid.
