Stream and Watershed Delineations using LiDAR Data TR-692

Dr. Brian Gelder will use algorithms that were developed for the Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB) (Gelder, 2015) to hydrologically enforce Light Detection and Radar Digital Elevation Models (LiDAR DEMs) for the watersheds of the 17 selected streamgages. The stream initiation methods will be used to generate at least four different stream networks for the watersheds of the 17 selected streamgages. The hydrologically enforced DEMs generated for 12-digit hydrologic unit codes (HUCs) will also be used to delineate new watershed boundaries for the total drainage area and for both the 20- and 2-percent AEP effective drainage areas for each of the streamgages for use in measuring basin characteristic values. The two effective drainage areas will be delineated as subsets of the total watershed area that actually contributes streamflow for given storm events, such as 20- and 2-percent AEP 24-hour rainfalls. The project proposes to use 20- and 2- percent AEPs in this study for effective drainage areas, along with the total drainage area, as this should cover the range of drainage areas well without calculating every AEP. LiDAR-generated areas of topographic depressions will be classified by storage volume and effective drainage areas will be delineated on the basis of whether this storage volume is exceeded by a given storm event.
