Guidebook and Decision Tool for Managing Airport Stormwater Containing Deicers
ACRP Report 14: Deicing Planning Guidelines and Practices for Stormwater Management Systems has become a standard reference for the management of airport deicing runoff, addressing a wide array of practices for the practical, cost-effective control of runoff from aircraft and airfield deicing and anti-icing operations. However, the document does not reflect the latest developments and experience/performance with technologies, practices, and products that reduce the volumes of deicers used during deicing operations, or progress in the treatment of runoff from aircraft deicing. In addition, significant regulatory and industry developments have occurred since its publication, reflecting a growing understanding of the environmental impacts associated with deicing activities and the effectiveness of existing stormwater management practices. Research is needed to provide airport practitioners with the latest guidance and management practices related to deicing activities and a decision tool to assist in evaluating stormwater management options suitable for their unique situation. The objectives of this research are to (1) update ACRP Report 14: Deicing Planning Guidelines and Practices for Stormwater Management Systems (including factsheets) and (2) develop a decision tool (e.g., electronic spreadsheet) to help airport practitioners evaluate sustainable and effective practices related to deicer application and the collection and treatment of stormwater containing deicers. The update and tool should reflect changes to regulations, increased understanding of deicer/deicing impacts on the environment, improved product formulations, advancements in technologies, and evolving trends in the aviation industry.
