Measurement of Bridge Deck Layout Prior to Concrete Placement

"Stringless" asphalt and concrete paving technologies are producing smoother riding surfaces and cutting waste. Such systems use computers loaded with the roadway design surface, electronic surveying equipment, and controllers connected to the paving machinery hydraulic elevation controls to produce a riding surface matching the design surface. Can such technology be used for bridge deck paving? This project will provide information on the feasibility of a key component of computer controlled bridge paving: accurate measurement of the predicted deck surface. Whereas road pavers are supported on the pavement subgrade, bridge deck pavers are supported on rails attached to the deck formwork, which in turn are supported on bridge girders spanning between supporting piers and abutments. The goal of this project is to develop a system to measure the predicted bridge deck surface before the concrete is placed. These measurements can alert the contractor to potential problems before the concrete deck is placed, and help avoid expensive repairs. The proposed system will also measure predicted concrete deck thicknesses and reinforcement cover. The objective of this project is to develop and test a system to measure bridge deck layouts before the concrete is placed. The measurements will indicate the concrete thickness, the concrete clear cover over the upper reinforcing steel, and the upper surface of the concrete slab for a section of bridge deck formed and ready for concrete placement. The measured deck layout could be compared to the design drawings and discrepancies, if any, could be corrected before concrete is placed. Once successfully developed and tested on actual bridge construction projects, the system could be extended (in a future project) to control the scree during concrete placement to produce a riding surface matching the design surface.
