Validation Study for Detection and Quantification of Corrosion in Bridge Barrier Rails

The proposed ground penetrating radar (GPR) research will have two major tasks: (1) At a highway bridge scheduled for barrier rail replacement, GPR reinforcing steel signatures will be measured prior to demolition. These signatures will be compared with reinforcing steel corrosion damage seen visually after demolition in an attempt to correlate the two. (2) Computer models of GPR inspections will be developed. The models will be used to estimate the likely sensitivity and reliability of GPR inspections for detecting the thinning of reinforcing steel due to corrosion.
