Development of Guidelines for the Deployment of Flashing Yellow Arrow Traffic Signals in Indiana (FYA)

It is estimated that roadway safety can be enhanced in Indiana through the addition of Flashing Yellow Arrows as an engineering option at traffic signals for protected/permitted turns. The addition of such a signal would serve to provide consistency between similar signal indications. The implementation of this technology may reduce crashes up to 30% at intersections. Statewide implementation of this may provide additional opportunities for INDOT to receive federal safety funds, resulting in a lifesaving and revenue positive change. Currently, Indiana does not have a comprehensive set of guidelines for statewide implementation practices; such will be remedied through this research.
