Investigating the Optimum Performance of Reflective Pavement Markers

The purpose of reflective pavement markers is to enhance the night-time visibility of roadway lane delineation and to increase preview time. Reflective pavement markers (RPMs) serve an even greater role in roadway safety during wet night conditions. During wet night conditions the visibility of horizontally placed pavement markings can become obscured by water on the pavement, but the elevated, reflective face of a pavement marker can still be seen. However, these markers occasionally become dislodged from the pavement, becoming a roadway hazard to motorists and requiring additional maintenance.
