Evaluation of PCC Pavement and Structure Coring and In-site Testing Alternatives

The objective of this research is to improve interpretation of core sample test results to predict in-place concrete strength. The effect of core condition (including presence of embedded rebar) and core conditioning procedures (dry and wet) on the measured compressive strength of the core sample will be considered. Another objective of the research to evaluate the utility of practical non-destructive testing methods for estimating in-place concrete strength that could be done to reduce the amount of required coring, or provide an estimate of in situ strength for locations that cannot be cored, such as in precast pre-stressed beams. Results from this study will assist Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to establish procedures to estimate in-place strength of concrete with greater accuracy, where such information could be used by IDOT to improve implementation of pay-for-performance specifications for PCC construction.
