Bridge Decks: Mitigation of Shrinkage Cracking (Phase 2 Study)

The primary objective of this study is to develop the mitigation strategies to reduce the premature cracking of bridge decks. Specific objectives include: (1) Develop optimized concrete mix with reduced cracking potential due to shrinkage. (2) Develop robust expansive concrete mix incorporating Type K or Type G additive into concrete with other commonly used admixtures (mineral and chemical admixtures). (3) Study possible beneficial effect of light weight aggregates. (4) Develop low shrinkage concrete mix incorporating SRA. (5) Perform structural testing on model deck of concrete with SRA. (6) Prepare finite element analysis that will assist in developing. (7) link between the small scale lab test data to large-scale data. (8) design and construction guidelines for field application.
