Evaluation of Software Simulation of Road Weather Information System

This project will evaluate the use of the Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model (EICM) as a means to determine pavement surface temperature for winter maintenance operations. If the model can be proven to determine pavement temperatures at the pavement surface to be accurate the EICM has potential to be used to supplement road weather information systems (RWIS). This project will collect detailed pavement information at Illinois Department of Transportation (DOT), Illinois Tollway, and McHenry County RWIS locations and use that pavement information to model pavement surface temperatures with the EICM. The modeled pavement surface temperatures will be compared to the measured pavement surface temperatures from the RWIS sensors. The analysis of the data will likely show that pavement material property inputs have a significant impact on the modeled pavement temperatures. The project will determine if appropriate EICM inputs to minimize model error can be readily determined from readily available data.
