Ultrasonic Tomography for Concrete Infrastructure Condition Assessment and Quality Assurance

The objective of this research is to evaluate best application of this new and promising imaging technology with regard to the specific needs of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to monitor and to characterize the concrete infrastructure within its domain. Appropriate use of this technology could provide important information, such as presence of delamination and corrosion in bridge decks, presence and extent of cracking and voiding in concrete elements, mechanical stiffness and density of surface concrete, location of embedded steel reinforcement, quality assurance measurements of pavement thickness, bonding, and uniformity of material. Each of the aforementioned inspection tasks may require specific modifications to the equipment and analysis approach to provide optimal analytical results. Such information could be used by IDOT to ensure sustainability of its concrete infrastructure.
