Testing, Performance Evaluation, and Documentation of the Little Silver Creek Bridge: An Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) Project using Accelerated Bridge Construction

As part of the State of Iowa's growing program to utilize Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) technologies and approaches, there are current plans to construct a second-generation of the bridge system originally used on US92 over Keg Creek. This continued evolution of promising concepts is a demonstration of the Iowa Department of Transportation's (Iowa DOT's) commitment to enhancing bridge construction. As with any concept evolution, several questions have arisen. The purpose of the work proposed herein is to provide the Iowa DOT with timely answers to several of those questions. The objective of the project is to evaluate the performance of a second generation ABC bridge that utilizes two types of continuity connections (i.e., the transverse joint at pier diaphragms and the longitudinal joint between precast superstructure/deck units). To achieve the objectives of this work the research team proposes: (1) conducting laboratory testing of two types of continuity connections to gain a better understanding of performance and behavior; (2) documenting the entire construction process of the second generation bridge; and (3) conducting onsite, controlled field testing of the bridge to evaluate the longitudinal continuity and lateral load distribution characteristics. To meet the objective of this project, a total of five tasks are proposed. These tasks will be performed in very close communication with a Technical Advisory Committee (established as one of the work tasks) throughout the duration of the project. Key staff from the Iowa State University (ISU) Bridge Engineering Center (BEC) will perform the research.
