Research for AASHTO Standing Committee on Highways. Task 324. NCHRP's Role in Maintaining AASHTO Guidelines and Specifications

Many of the current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) guidelines and specifications are a result of research conducted in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP). After these products have been in use for a number of years, they may require additional research to incorporate the current state of knowledge or practice or additional work may have been completed that should be incorporated into the AASHTO product. Concerns have been raised over the timeliness of updates and over the "piecemeal" approach to updating manuals. The objective of this study is to document the process currently used to update manuals and guides and to make recommendations for needed improvements (including appropriate funding sources).
