Guide for Transportation Landscape and Environmental Design

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee on Landscape and Environmental Design and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Technical Committee on Environmental Design have recognized that the current AASHTO "Guide for Transportation Landscape and Environmental Design" is outdated as a comprehensive design guidance resource. There is a need for an improved single publication that provides comprehensive and integrated guidance for transportation landscape and environmental design. The evolution of a context-sensitive approach to project development, and other emerging fields of study, afford the opportunity to better analyze, understand, integrate, balance, and improve transportation and the environment at both the system level and the project level. The research and development of a new, comprehensive web-based AASHTO Guide will be beneficial to public agencies and all practitioners and managers faced with the challenge of improving transportation mobility, safety, and the affected natural and human environment. The objective of this research is to develop a comprehensive guide to integrating landscape and environmental design principles into the overall transportation project-development process. The scope of the Guide will include considerations related to planning, financing, design, construction, maintenance, and operations. The Guide will be developed in a format suitable for adoption or adaptation by AASHTO.
