Non-Contact Driver Drowsiness Detection System

The purpose of this project was to develop and test the effectiveness of an innovative real time drowsiness detection sensor to minimize crashes due to driver drowsiness. The sensor non-invasively monitors the physiological signs of drivers and determine the onset and extent of drowsiness. The project investigators further developed and refine, the non-contact electrocardiography (ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG) sensing platform. This project evaluated the system performance by installation on a laboratory high fidelity driving simulator. The project also evaluated the effectiveness of different countermeasures. The sensor system would have application for railroad train operators and bus and truck drivers.
