Quantitative X-Ray Diffraction and Microstructural Analysis of Cementitious Materials

The objectives of the proposed research are 1) to investigate analytical techniques that are currently available for crystalline phase quantification through primarily the use of x-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, 2) to determine the accuracy of each technique in determining the crystalline and total amorphous/unidentified content of cement; 3) to investigate the possibility of quantification of contributions from different supplementary cementitious materials to the total amorphous content of blended portland cements; 4) to evaluate how suitable each technique would be for routine cement analysis: and 5) to establish a protocol to quantify crystalline phase content of portland cement. Satisfying the objectives of this study will provide the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) with the tools necessary to enable the State Materials Office (SMO) to conduct the mineralogical needed to reliably qualify materials. This would therefore imply that SMO would be in a position to tailor durability of concrete mix designs, and aid in the development and management of performance-based specifications. Without this research, SMO will be limited in its ability to ensure the quality and durability of future Florida concrete structures.
