High Speed Railroad Bridge Dynamics and Ratings

This project will include the development of bridge rating standards for train speeds greater than 90 mph that take into account bridge/train interaction. A mathematical model will be developed that simulates the bridge response to high speed trains. The project will focus on railroad bridge normal rating standards, equations, and methodologies with respect to high speed trains. This information and material is expected to aid the practicing railroad bridge engineer in calculating bridge ratings at train speeds beyond the current limits in the Manual for Railway Engineering of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA). Project tasks include development of the mathematical model, instrumenting an Amtrak bridge, collection and analysis of field data generated by passing trains, validation of the mathematical model data with the field data, and use of the model to develop bridge ratings for high-speed train operations.
