Investigation of a Full-Lane Acoustic Scanning Method for Bridge Deck NDE

This project will develop and test an acoustic scanning method for non-destructive condition evaluation of bridge decks. Work in Stage 1 focuses on the development of an acoustic scanning prototype system. Mechanical components of the testing prototype have been procured and assembled. The prototype design considers issues such as impact source type, trigger mechanism, background noise, rolling vibrations, etc. The basic requirements for non-contact sensors for the proposed seismic-based tests have been established. This effort is guided by finite element simulations of the expected responses from defective and healthy deck structures. The data acquisition and analysis hardware and software are being developed. The acquisition and analysis are carried out using self-contained, personalized software toolbox functions that have been developed. Work in the Stage 2 will focus on system refinement and field evaluation. The spatial arrangement of the sensors in the field prototype will be optimized. The prototype unit will be evaluated for accuracy and efficiency in detecting defects in laboratory test specimens prior to field testing. Following testing at an in-house pavement site, the prototype system will be field tested on an in-service bridge deck. The final report will document all data and developments of the bridge deck scanning system along with an assessment of the technology for implementation and commercialization.
