Development of a Second Generation Neutron-Based Detector for Chloride in Concrete

This project will develop and test a neutron-based detector system for detecting and measuring chloride in in-service concrete. The work will be carried out in three stages. Work in Stage 1 will focus on optimizing the design of the chloride detection system through numerical simulations of the neutron and gamma ray transport mechanisms utilizing the computer code MCNP and optical ray tracing. The optimization will include the moderator design and the detectors configuration. Work in Stage 2 will focus on assembling the instrument and its calibration for chloride measurement. The neutron-based detector system will be fabricated and its performance evaluated using known gamma-ray standards. The system will be calibrated for chloride detection using concrete slabs with known amounts of chloride. Work in the third and final stage will focus on field testing of the chloride detector system on highway bridges selected in collaboration with Maryland State Highway Administration. The chloride test results will be compared with those obtained by conventional chemical methods on drilled concrete cores. The final report will provide all data and guidelines for implementing the neutron-based technology for detecting chloride in concrete in the field.
