Scanning Capacitive Arrays for Real-Time, In-Situ Imaging of Density and Thickness in HMA Roadways

This project will develop and evaluate the application of scanning dielectrometer arrays for real-time imaging of density and thickness of hot mix asphalt during asphalt pavement construction. The work will be carried out in two stages. Work in Stage 1 will focus on establishing the parameters necessary for using scanning dielectric arrays for real-time imaging of hot mix asphalt (HMA) density during pavement construction. Dieclectrometer measurements will be made on HMA samples to establish baseline values for complex permittivity. Local variations in permittivity as well as any effect of temperature will also be evaluated. Computer simulation of dielectrometer arrays for scanning and imaging of HMA mat during pavement construction will be performed and correlations of material dielectric and geometric properties with physical properties will be investigated. Work in Stage 2 will focus on laboratory testing of scanning array methodology to determine its technical feasibility. Laboratory testing on large format dielectrometer arrays will be conducted and their performance compared with that predicted by computer simulations. Issues dealing with resolution for determining density variations, adequacy of scan rate for construction process, and the effect of temperature variations in the HMA mat will be addressed. The use of water as a dielectric penetrant for tracking porosity in aging HMA pavements will also be investigated. The final report will contain all data and provide guidelines for field implementation of the technology.
