Synthesis of Information Related to Highway Problems. Topic 46-17. Training and Certification of Highway Maintenance Workers

Highway maintenance workers perform a broad range of tasks on roads and bridges in all weather and traffic conditions. In the performance of their duties they are exposed to a variety of challenges and hazards. These workers need appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform their activities effectively, thereby ensuring mobility and safety on the nation's highway system. Accordingly, suitable training and certification of maintenance workers is vital to their efficiency and safety. The objective of this synthesis is to document and summarize current practices for training and certification of front-line highway maintenance workers. The synthesis will focus on training directly related to the performance of their job duties. To the extent possible, the synthesis will document the rationale behind requiring a certification in addition to training. This information will help agencies evaluate and improve their maintenance training and certification programs.
