PCC Surface Characteristics: Tire-Pavement Noise Program Part 3 - Innovative Solutions/Current Practices

The purpose of this pooled fund study (Part 3) is to fully implement the portland cement concrete (PCC) Surface Characteristics program. This project is related to a larger study involving two other parts (Part 1 and 2). Those two parts are summarized in the attached Appendix B. Part 3 will consist of the continuation of the comprehensive data collection and analysis program on new and existing pavements started in 2005; expand on it so that the research results have a broader range of applicability; and develop innovative texturing techniques that have the potential to significantly reduce noise. At the completion of this overall study, it is anticipated that it will be possible to specify the desirable surface characteristics of individual projects prior to construction to meet the site specific requirements for noise, skid, texture, and smoothness.
