2243 - Recommended Fatigue Test for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation

Fatigue cracking and rutting are two dominant distresses in flexible pavements. Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) currently evaluates the rutting potential of asphalt mixes through the Hamburg rut test in accordance to OHD L-55. This test method is similar to AASHTO T324. However, no standard test procedure is currently available to ODOT for screening of mixes for fatigue resistance, which is extremely important for quality control and quality assurance of flexible pavements. Laboratory tests to determine fatigue resistance and/or fatigue life of asphalt mixes have not been widely used by many Departments of Transportation (DOT's) throughout the country due to roadblocks such as high degree of variability among the various test methods, equipment cost, lack of uniform test protocol, and time needed to perform the test. The ODOT will benefit greatly if these roadblocks could be overcome or reduced significantly to allow the agency to adopt a fatigue test for the screening of asphalt mixes. To this end, the proposed study will investigate selected test methods and procedures to measure fatigue resistance or fatigue life of different types of asphalt mixes. Mechanistic frameworks, namely dissipated energy, fracture mechanics, and viscoelastic continuum damage, will be utilized to analyze the data, as appropriate. The variability and repeatability of each test method will be evaluated statistically. Finally, a test method, procedure, and the associated equipment will be recommended that can be used by ODOT for screening asphalt mixes for their fatigue resistance, during the mix design phase.
