Installation and Evaluation of Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) System Utilizing Quartz Piezo Sensor Technology

Problem Statement: The need exists to collect high quality WIM data. Quartz-Piezoelectric technology had been developed but had not been installed or tested on a highway in the United States. Project Objectives: Install a quartz-piezoelectric based WIM system, and determine sensor survivability, accuracy and reliability under actual traffic conditions in Connecticut's environment. Project Benefits: The results of this study should provide insight for future installations of this technology. Should the systems prove dependable and durable, it is expected that these systems will offer the ability to collect improved statistical estimates of traffic loads for planning and design of roads and bridges and weight enforcement screening in comparison to traditional ceramics piezoelectric sensors. If the technology provides the ability to collect improved data quality, it is anticipated that improved data analyses and calibration methods will be possible.
