Thin-Bonded Overlays on Asphalt Surfaces

Wearing surfaces are utilized on bridge decks in Colorado to maximize service life of the bridge decks by preventing infiltration of water and chemicals that deteriorate concrete and corrode the steel reinforcement. Maintenance and replacement of these wearing surfaces requires extensive time, money, and equipment. Recent advances in thin-bonded overlays have resulted in materials with improved wearing surfaces, in addition to reputed anti-icing properties. The anti-icing components of these new materials have the potential for improving driver safety during winter conditions and the improved wearing surfaces should reduce bridge deck maintenance costs. If the products examined in this study provide durable skid-resistant wearing surfaces with proven anti-icing properties, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be able to recommend these products for future bridge construction and rehabilitation projects.
