Use of an Innovative Lightweight, Laser Welded Steel Sandwich Panel Bridge Deck
Maine Department of Transportation is working with Precision Light Systems to design, manufacture and install a lightweight laser welded steel sandwich panel on a truss bridge in Gardiner, Maine. The steel sandwich panel uses technology developed in Europe and further refined in Maine for navy ship applications. The advantages of this system are lightweight, longer lasting, closed deck that doesn't allow winter chemicals to collect on truss members. Phase 1 of this work is design, prototype testing for fatigue loading. Phase 2 will be manufacturing and installation.
