Warm Mix Asphalt Technology for HMA and Recycled Asphalt Pavements
Warm Mix Asphalt Technology for HMA and Recycled Asphalt Pavements The costs of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements and recycled asphalt pavements continue to increase at a level much greater than inflation rates causing severe financial difficulties and seriously jeopardizing MaineDOT's ability to maintain our highways. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology has been proven in Europe and shows promise for applications in hot mix asphalt and recycled asphalt pavements. Some interesting work using WMA with Maine materials has already been completed by Worcester Polytechnic Institute. These preliminary results suggest that we can produce a hot mix asphalt pavement with a high percentage of RAP using WMA technology and not reduce the overall quality. The research being proposed here is two-fold. 1. To conduct lab work with WMA on HMA mixes with 30, 50 and 75% RAP and 2. Conduct a field study with 100% RAP (our typical Plant Mix RAP specification) using asphalt and WMA instead of emulsion. Work will be completed over two years.
