Development of CDOT Materials and Construction Specifications for Bridge Deck Sealers

Chemical sealers, applied on the top concrete surface, are employed by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) for waterproofing new and existing bridge decks that don't have asphalt overlays. These and other commercially available sealer products are intended to reduce the penetration of chloride ions from deicing salts, thereby preventing corrosion of the reinforcing steel. Current CDOT specifications are very limited in the types of penetration and crack sealers allowed. This study will develop generic material and construction specifications for sealers that would allow for acceptance of other types of sealer materials based on the results of performance tests.
