Preventing Transverse Bumps and Cracks in New Asphalt Overlays Over Crack Sealants

Crack sealants are often placed in transverse cracks to extend pavement life. However, when hot mix asphalt overlays are placed on top of the sealants, pavement bumps and additional transverse cracks can occur in the new overlays. Previous research indicates that the problem may result from the overlays slipping on the sealants during rolling. Suggestions to mitigate this problem include overlay mixtures with high frictional properties; variations of the compaction equipment and rolling schemes; and use of stiffer track coats and sealant materials. This research will seek to identify the primary reasons for these cracks and bumps and determine the best mitigation approach.
