LED Lighting to Replace Overhead Lighting

Colorado state law requires lighting methods to minimize light pollution caused by overhead lighting at highway interchanges. During reconstruction of two structures on I-25 in Trinidad, the overhead luminaire lighting will be replaced by light-emitting diode (LED) lights mounted on the barriers adjacent to the highway rather than on poles above the structures. Over a 5-year period, the LED lighting will be evaluated for effectiveness in delineating the highway and interchanges associated with the structures. Costs, ease of installation and maintenance, and durability of the LED lighting components will also be evaluated. Accident data will be gathered during the study and compared with a like time period before installation of the LED lighting. Other projects will be added to the study as they become available.
