Aircraft Disinsection Research
The Department of Transportation (DOT), in association with a number of US Government agencies, has been exploring alternative approaches to the disinsection of aircraft using insecticides. To further this effort, DOT supported research by ARS's Center for Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary Entomology (CMAVE). That research has shown that non-chemical approaches are a promising alternative to the use of insecticides. Accordingly, the World Health Organization (WHO) wants to hold an informal meeting of the key members of the global community who have a stake in aircraft disinsection at CMAVE in the fall of 2008. This is expected to be followed by a formal meeting of all interested parties at WHO Headquarters. The funding will be utilized by CMAVE for contributing to the (a) research that will be presented at the WHO meeting in Florida and (b) initiate research activities that arise following this meeting. The scope of the work covers CMAVE's research that is needed to improve and refine existing, non-insecticidal aircraft disinsection techniques. Proposed tasks for this project include: (1) conducting research on the use of netting material for improved aircraft disinsection; (2) preparing a protocol for disinsecting an airplane; and (3) conducting research to answer questions and concerns arising at the informal WHO meeting in Florida.
