Aviation Traffic Data Modernization

In order to meet the Department's needs, the primary goal of the Aviation Traffic Data Modernization Project is to create an information system that efficiently collects, stores, and allows access to useful, factual information about the purchase and the delivery of scheduled passenger air travel to, from, and within the U.S. in a timely fashion. The project will produce a system that will: (1) Collect, store, and integrate information about both the purchase of travel and about the delivery of travel in a way that is consistent with the Department's statutory and regulatory need for information. (2) Align data collection with modern airline information technology methods in a way that will, to the greatest extent practicable, minimize the data-reporting burden on air carriers, (3) Track and manage information in a manner consistent with the guidelines to the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 that directs agencies to develop and maintain information resources such that it can substantiate the quality of the information it disseminates, (4) Integrate data elements to allow seamless association of attribute information between the information the Department collects from airlines and other ancillary data such as information about airports and airline schedules in order to maximize the usefulness and effectiveness of the information. (5) Disseminate information to the public that enables public users to understand and analyze air travel, the purchase of air travel, and the taxes on air travel, from, to, and within the U.S as required by law without revealing personally identifying information of any individual and without revealing essential trade secrets of any airline.
