CORS 911: Continuously Operating Reference Stations for the Bayou Corne Sinkhole
The Center for GeoInformatics (C4G) at Louisiana State University (LSU) proposes to fabricate, deploy, and maintain a network of five (5) continuously operating reference stations (CORS) of global positioning system (GPS) receivers and antennas designed to actively monitor and measure the surface motions of the route and its bridges. The stations will be deployed at select locations along Highway 70 between Bayou Corne (in the west) and Bayou Choupique (in the east), and rely on GPS antennas and receivers that will be networked together using cellular communication modems and software maintained by the C4G. These stations will be integrated within the C4G Real Time Network (RTN) in order to measure horizontal and vertical motions relative to itself and to a constrained point of reference (e.g., the North American continent). The software purports to achieve a positional accuracy of 2mm under ideal conditions (Trimble, 2007). Continuous measurements can also be used to notify the Louisiana Department of Transportation (LADOTD) personnel should motions exceed pre-defined thresholds. Furthermore, each CORS enclosure may be co-located with sensor relays deployed by the LADOTD. Correlating GPS positions with the LADOTD sensors readings may further enhance road monitoring. Data transmitted from the CORS will be made available to stakeholders and decision makers in accordance with the response activities initiated by the LADOTD.
