Fatigue Testing of Brass Breakaway Couplings

A concrete base will be attached to the strong wall located in NSEL in order to determine the stress concentration factor at the bottom of the notch on the machined brass couplers. The notched brass couplers will be placed in a 50 kip servohydraulic testing frame to be loaded to given stress levels to determine fatigue life. The fracture surface of each coupler will be examined using low magnification (10x) microscopy in order to develop a correlation between fatigue zone and brittle fracture zone as a function of stress level and fatigue life.
