Effects of Intersection Right-Turn Lane Design & Skew on Safety & Operations

In order to accomplish the research objectives, 10 specific tasks were identified. These include conducting a comprehensive literature review, querying the statewide traffic crash data to identify contributing factors of right turn configurations that may lead to crashes, conducting an effectiveness evaluation of at least 7 reconfigured intersections in Central Illinois, and meeting and coordinating with the TRP. The effectiveness evaluation will be based on operational and traffic crash data. Several experimental plans will be used to assess the effects of the redesigned intersections, including the Empirical Bayes method, which reduces regression to the mean bias. All necessary statistical analyses will be conducted to support the research findings. An economic analysis will also be conducted. All data collection methodologies, analyses, results, conclusions and recommendations will be documented in a final report.
