Restoration Progress & Flood Disturbance at IDOT Wetland Mitigation Sites

The majority of Illinois wetlands and most Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) wetland mitigation sites are located in floodplain areas. These areas are subject to varying degrees of flooding depending on their location within a given watershed and their climate zone within the state. Although floodplain wetlands are supported by regular flooding, extreme flooding can also produce excessive sediment, create ice damage and inundate and kill wetland plants. The proposed research will focus on quantifying flood characteristics at several IDOT wetland mitigation sites and analyzing the relationship between flooding and plant community development, with particular focus on the achievement of vegetation-based performance standards. The research will draw on past and current data from the IDOT wetlands program. The project will consist of compilation of existing data housed at the INHS and ISGS, computation of flood statistics, and statistical analysis. In addition, the project will initiate a field study to determine the effect of flooding on planted tree survival at newly constructed IDOT wetlands. In order to evaluate the consequences of recent changes in wetland delineation methodology, wetland establishment at IDOT wetland mitigation sites will be assessed in the context of the 1987 US Army Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual and the 2010 Regional Supplement to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual: Midwest Region.
